The stamp was issued to commemorate Title IX’s 50th anniversary. The design by artist Melinda Beck features a female runner in dark blue silhouette with yellow laurel branches, symbolizing victory.

The First Day of Issue Ceremony took place at the US Department of Education in Washington, DC. Title IX, passed in the Education Amendments of 1972, inspired the choice.

The Title IX set includes four stamp designs depicting female athletes with laurel branches. These designs symbolize fair competition for talented female athletes without gender discrimination.

The stamp represents Jacqueline Joyner-Kersee’s athletic career at UCLA and her achievements in track and field. She won silver in the heptathlon at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, just five points behind the gold medalist.

Joyner-Kersee continued breaking records, earning Olympic gold medals in long jump and heptathlon. Sports Illustrated named her the greatest female athlete of the 20th century, showcasing what female athletes can achieve when given the chance.
